Government Recruitment Website Redesign

As part of our digital response to a career recruitment organisation's falling application rates, we transformed the  website.

We unified four brands to create a single message; creating an experience that provides guidance and inspiration for confident decision making. We rethought the information architecture, content and experience strategy, and design system.

UX research synthesis, UX design, testing, presentation, collaboration with UI, Development, Strategy and Stakeholders.

Problem

Our research showed that many people were overwhelmed and paralysed by the vast amounts of complex and confusing options on the original website. A brand-centric structure with few navigational breadcrumbs meant that people even described clicking anything as 'scary'!

The organisation's acronyms and vernacular meant that there was already a high cognitive load on prospective applicants. In addition, the website left people to navigate through endless choices without guidance or digital support.

Solution

I collaborated with our clients and team to rethink the information architecture of the site. Afterwards, I created content and design strategies for key pages and designed wireframes. I included interactive personalisation experiences (for example, questionnaires and filters) for key moments across the site. Throughout this process, I worked closely with our extremely talented UI Designer to iterate our design system.

Iterations

Data-driven & iterative improvements

I made rapid updates to the live website throughout the redesign; working with our data analysts to determine what was and wasn't working, then used the original website's existing content and design system to quickly and strategically make changes.

For example, we discovered that interaction with carousel media and accordions was low. I pulled most content out of these components, updated others, then worked with several groups of stakeholders to enact these changes as quickly as possible.

Lessons I learnt

This project was a whirlwind of fast-paced decision-making, where precision and clear communication were paramount. It taught me the value of balancing deep thinking with rapid ideation, and the ability to articulate design thinking to justify decisions.

After the first few sprints, I learnt the importance of setting clear expectations for our team, defining our roles, and effectively communicating with other teams involved in the project.

Honest and considerate dialogue fostered trust with other teams and empowered us to collectively overcome challenges, pressure and the occasional sleepless night as a team.
